India captain handed ‘finished’ verdict

India National Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma faced brutal criticism after failing to deliver with the bat in the ODI series opener against England National Cricket Team on Thursday, February 6.

Rohit Sharma has been going through a lean patch in international cricket for a very long time now and he once again flopped at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Jamtha, Nagpur.

Rohit Sharma scores 2 runs in 1st ODI

The India skipper came to open the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal instead of Shubman Gill in the ODI series opener against the Three Lions.

This was because Gill was demoted to the No.3 spot with Virat Kohli missing the match due to a knee issue he faced a day before the start of the England ODI series.

Rohit Sharma initially didn’t get a strike in the match as Yashasvi Jaiswal played most of the balls. However, the youngster was dismissed on the third ball of the 5th over by Jofra Archer.

Then, the Indian skipper fell to Saqib Mahmood in the very next over. On the second ball of the 6th over, Mahmood bowled an inswinger and Rohit looked to whip it over midwicket.

However, the timing of his shot was extremely poor and the ball went up in the air. The English player Liam Livingstone settled underneath the ball and completed the catch easily to send the Indian skipper back.

Rohit had to take a long walk back to the dugout after scoring 2 runs off 7 balls and the Men In Blue were reduced to 19 for 2.

After a horror show in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Rohit would have been hoping for a better outing on his ODI return but that didn’t happen. Overall, in his last 17 innings in international cricket, Rohit has scored just 201 runs at an average of 11.8 and just one half-century.

How Did India Perform In Their Previous ODI Match?

In their previous ODI match against Sri Lanka on August 7, 2024, India delivered a disappointing performance, suffering a heavy 110-run defeat.

Set a target of 249 runs after Sri Lanka posted 248/7, India’s batting failed under pressure as Sri Lanka spinners dominated. The top-order struggled against spin, with Rohit Sharma being the only one to get a great start, scoring 35 off 20 balls. Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant were dismissed cheaply, leaving India at 71/4 within the first 10.5 overs.

The middle order also struggled with Axar Patel, Shreyas Iyer, Riyan Parag, and Shivam Dube failing to make an impact. India’s lower order couldn’t recover, as they were bowled out for 138 in just 26.1 overs. Dunith Wellalage was the wrecker in chief for Sri Lanka, claiming 5 wickets for 27 runs, while Maheesh Theekshana also contributed with 2 wickets.

The loss in the match meant India ended their series against Sri Lanka on a bitter note, marking their first ODI bilateral series loss to Sri Lanka in 27 years.
