Like it or don’t like it, boxers trading words on social media is becoming the norm, and recently undefeated Mayweather Promotions 18-year-old prodigy Curmel “Big Deal” Moton got in on the action as he shared some words, or more like an emoji directed towards a man who is on the verge of eclipsing his mentor’s record.
A native of Fort Stockton, Texas, Abel Mendoza made his boxing debut back in March 2016 when he defeated Juan Muniz by way of a unanimous decision. Mendoza would go on to consistently experience success inside of the squared circle as he managed to maintain an unblemished record for the next eight years.
Now, the 29-year-old lightweight contender Abel Mendoza (42-0, 31 KOs) is eight wins away from tying Floyd Mayweather’s mark of (50-0). Mendoza has a good chance of tying and surpassing Mayweather’s record, but the difference between the two is the fact that Mayweather achieved the mark in legendary fashion.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. made his pro debut back in October 1996 when he stopped Roberto Apodaca in the second round. Over the next two decades, Mayweather became a five-division champion who won 15 major world titles.
Mayweather’s path to (50-0) included victories over world champions such as Diego Corrales, Sharmba Mitchell, Arturo Gatti, Carlos Baldomir, Zab Judah, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya, Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley, Canelo Alvarez, and Manny Pacquiao.
Abel Mendoza’s journey to his 40-plus wins is a complete contrast to the road that Mayweather took to achieve his record-setting mark. All of Mendoza’s wins have come against mediocre competition, as 24 of his 42 opponents held losing records.
In his most recent ring appearances, Mendoza scored victories over German Ivan Meraz (65-69, 41 KOs) and Yonnaiquer Rondon (22-3-1, 17 KOs).
Abel Mendoza’s status as an undefeated fighter with over 40 wins has translated into more media attention, and due to the media coverage, a fast-rising prospect has placed Abel Mendoza on his radar.
When Curmel Moton viewed a post from World Boxing News referencing the projected time it will take for Abel Mendoza to break Mayweather’s record, Moton responded to the post by using the trash can emoji. Mayweather’s record was used as the narrative to the story, but during his interview with WBN, Mendoza stated the record wasn’t part of his plan.
“My goal was never to beat Floyd’s record. It is to become world champion.”
Whether Mendoza wants the record or not, the subject of the record is the reason why a Curmel Moton vs Abel Mendoza bout makes sense.
Mayweather’s protege Curmel Moton (7-0, 6 KOs) appears to be willing to face Mendoza, but Mendoza seems to be questioning Moton in regards to being the type of opponent Mendoza wants to face.
During his interview with Jeremy Fiorentino, Abel Mendoza spoke about Moton not being worthy of the opportunity to fight him. Mendoza believes he’s at the point of his boxing career where he should be fighting top contenders and world champions.
Abel Mendoza is a confident fighter who believes his undefeated record carries a lot of weight. During the interview, both Jeremy Fiorentino and Abel Mendoza labeled Curmel Moton’s call out as Moton skipping the rankings.
Mendoza doesn’t think a boxer who has seven fights on his resume deserves the opportunity to face an undefeated fighter with 42 wins. Mendoza refused to recognize Moton as a worthy opponent right now, but he did state a time when he’ll be willing to fight Moton.
“After I knock out Tank, and he (Moton) becomes a contender, I will give him a shot.”
Apparently, what Abel Mendoza is failing to realize is the fact that at this point and time, nobody knows Abel Mendoza, but they do know the blue-chip prospect for Mayweather Promotions Curmel “Big Deal” Moton.
Yes, Abel Mendoza has an eye-catching record, but he doesn’t have the notoriety. At this point in time, Abel Mendoza’s current situation is like a business owner owning 100 percent of nothing. Curmel Moton only has seven fights on his resume, but one thing Moton does have going for him is notoriety.
With that being said, it’s a no brainer that Abel Mendoza needs a fight against Curmel Moton. Despite the fact that the undefeated Mendoza already had 42 fights, a win over Curmel Moton would be, by far, the biggest victory of Mendoza’s career.
The list of Abel Mendoza’s previous opponents is not suspicious, it’s flat out terrible, as all you can see is mediocrity across the board. Mendoza’s 42 win record is a flex, but the problem is recently, we were able to see Mendoza lose.
Back in December 2023, in a bout that was labeled as an exhibition, Abel Mendoza lost to Vsevolod Shumkov. Six months later, Abel Mendoza lost to Jason Sanchez in another bout that was labeled an exhibition.
Abel Mendoza has 35 more fights than Curmel Moton, but despite the numbers, from a skills standpoint, they’re basically on the same level. With that being said, it’s time for somebody to send the contract.
